The Ring of Kerry

4/1/10
Waking up early and getting back in the car we headed for the ring of Kerry. For those of you not familiar with The Ring of Kerry, it is a 200 kilometer drive that winds its way through a National park that is one of the most scenic parks in all of Ireland. Our first stop along the ring was at a house that sits right on the water and is absolutely stunning. Making the 3k walk from the car park right along the water’s edge was spectacular.

Walking through the woods for a bit, the trail leads out into a beautiful garden area and the pathway to the house itself. From the front steps of the house the view out to the water was breathtaking.

We milled around the gardens for awhile before we headed back to the car and to the nearby waterfalls. After the falls we continued on to one of the most beautiful views of the drive at Lady’s View.

Here we sat in the car for a quick picnic of delicious peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and made the decision to double back to the gap of Dunloe rather than completing the rest of the drive that would have taken the remainder of the day. At the Gap of Dunloe you are not allowed to drive up to the lakes in the valley, and since it is a 3k walk that we didn’t have time to complete we decided to rent a horse drawn carriage to take us to the center.

A very good decision. Sitting in the carriage with our friendly driver, and our horse Queeny pulling us through, we passed three small lakes and the purple mountains, before reaching the final and largest lake in the valley just before the gap itself. Stopping here for a brief photo op, we then made the descent back to the car park and headed off to catch the ferry to continue our drive to Doolin.
