Galway, probably my favorite of the large cities we visited in Ireland, is busting at the seams with culture. A university town that is full of life and the arts, is chockfull of vibrant cafes and pubs, enthusiastic students, and friendly locals. As we settled into our room we found that Chase, a Canadian guy we had met in our dorm in Cork, was again in the same dorm room as us and invited him to join us for a beer and some food. While at dinner we met another Canadian, Melissa, who was also traveling by herself and invited her to join us for the evening. The four of us headed over to a local pub and sat here for hours enjoying a jam session by a trio of local college students.
A truly great setting for the night, sitting in a pub in Galway Ireland, drinking Guinness, and listening to the impromptu jams of a guitar, flute, and hand drum. The next day Chase and Kristin took a walk about the town while I got caught up on further bookings for my trip and relaxed at the hostel. That night the three of us headed out for dinner and to another local pub for another jam session and some whisky. This jam session, a little more traditional, consisted of a group of five, playing everything from drum, flute, guitars, and a fiddle.
Packed into the pub with locals and travelers alike, we had another fantastic evening that was about to get even better. As we left the pub we were offered a drink special to check out a club that had recently opened in town. We sat outside the club for a good five minutes trying to decide if we wanted to pay the four euro cover charge to get in, which, as we soon all agreed were the best four euros we had spent on this trip. Just after walking into the club we rounded the corner to the dance floor to find bouncing bare breasts. Walking in at just the right time, the DJ had encouraged and succeeded at getting some of the partygoers to head to the dance floor and take off their clothes. Brilliant.
We made our way to the bar, got our two for one drinks and found a table to talk and enjoy the show. After a cocktail or two we decided to hit the dance floor ourselves, however, we agreed to keep our clothes on. Not ten minutes after getting out on the dance floor the DJ announced that they had something special planned for us that night. He threw on Country Road, by John Denver, as one of the other workers brought out bales of hay and proceeded to dump them into the middle of the dance floor.
Joining in with the others we all happily went for a roll in the hay. Did I mention this was the best four euros have I spent yet? Following the hay party was the kissing train. The first time I have ever seen anything like this in a club, and I’m still not sure how I feel about it. Basically what the kissing train was, every guy in the club, except for Chase and I, getting in line to make out with a girl who was standing just to the left of the DJ booth. Weird and disgusting, but entertaining none the less. As the club got to closing time, and not sure we would be able to handle any more excitement for the night, we headed back to the hostel, climbed into our beds, and headed off to sleep.
